If you’ve always wanted to have a go on the potter’s wheel but not really had the chance, then this is for you! I love throwing and thought it would be nice to offer the experience to other people. My aim is for you to have a go, enjoy yourself in a relaxed environment and hopefully make a pot or two.
· You will not have to share your booking with anyone else – it’s fine if you want to come on your own. Bookings can be made for up to three people.
· Children 11 years old and up are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (the adult does not need to pay to participate if they are only attending to watch and supervise. At least one adult per two children please)
· A non-refundable deposit of £5 is required to secure your booking, payable via the website or by cash or bank transfer. The balance can be paid on the day, at the end of the workshop by cash or credit/debit card.
· The workshop will last approximately 2 hours. You will be guided step-by-step through the basics of throwing on the wheel.
· We’ll stop around half-way through for a quick cuppa and biscuits.
· At the end of your session you can choose one of your creations to be glazed and fired (any additional pots can be glazed and fired from £5 each)
Your pots should be ready to collect within 4-6 weeks. If you prefer, we can arrange to post your pots directly to you at an additional cost.
· The studio can get very cold during the autumn and winter so please wrap up warm if the weather is cold. Don’t wear your best clothes – you’re quite likely to end up with some clay on you, although I tend to make more mess than most! Aprons will be provided.
Please don’t wear any jewellery that might get lost or damaged, please tie long hair back, and you might want to have your nails short to make it easier to handle the clay.
Inside the studio at Daisy M - three potter's wheels available as well as a space for hand-building.
If you’ve already attended a Beginner’s Throwing Workshop, you might want to come back and have a practice, learn some hand building skills and work on some projects of your own.
To keep the clay recycling simple, we use a single, buff stoneware clay that is ideal for both throwing and hand-building. You can decorate your pieces with a variety of underglazes and glazes. We use a standard two-firing process using a small electric kiln – pieces are allowed to dry completely before being bisque-fired in the kiln, you can then book another session to glaze your pieces, or for a small charge they can be dipped in a glaze for you before they go back into the kiln for a stoneware firing. If there is something specific you have in mind, we can try to accommodate you but please remember that pottery is a skill that takes times and practice to develop -it may take more than one or two sessions to finish your piece. Feel free to drop Jo an email if there is something you have in mind or add a note when booking your lesson.
Small and medium pieces made as part of the learning process are included in the class fee so for most people there are no extra charges. Clay can be recycled as many times as you like until it has been fired, and the best way to learn is to keep practising – so you are free to make as many pots as you like and we will recycle anything you decide not to keep, all included in the lesson fees. Once you are happy with your creation it will be bisque fired ready for you to glaze and be re-fired.
